What Can You Lose
Lets face it, you have a lot to lose when a minor can make a purchase of Liquor or Tobacco products from your establishment . You can lose your License, get a high fine, even be sued if someone gets hurt.
Research shows that minors obtain Tobacco and Liquor products in two ways: Purchasing at a retail store themselves, or having someone of age purchase for them.
What I Did
When I opened my first convenience store many years ago, the first thing I did was find out everything I could about keeping minors away from Alcohol and Tobacco. During this time, not once did I think of checking IDs as a chore, but rather a public service. I felt it was my job to keep Liquor & Tobacco items out of the hands of minors. Okay I am a control freak, I liked playing Police Officer.
Of course I had a vested interest in following the laws. I had a Liquor License to protect and I did not want to pay those high fines. This is not always true for the people you hire. The responsibility of an illegal sale falls back onto the owner no matter who made the sale. You face the music and you pay the fine.
Your Employees
Even with the proper training human beings make errors. Many steps are involved to making sure an ID is valid and the customer is of age. The biggest problem I noticed was the employee had a hard time calculating the age, especially when they were extremely busy with customers. Minors are very smart. Never under estimate them, they know when you are at your busiest and will take advantage of the situation.

That is why I use the Birthdate Calculator to do the math for me. It cuts down on the mathematical errors that could be made. One word of caution, this will not work if the clerk does not utilize the software. They must ask to view the ID and then enter the proper data to get the output. One employee was caught not using the Birthdate Calculator to double check the math. This clerk had a retraining session pronto. With proper training and education, retailers can help prevent illegal sales to minors.

1. Unzip the downloaded file to your local computer for example:
C:\Program Files\Age_Verification\Birthdate_Calculator .
2. Make sure all of the files are unzipped to that file.
3. Open the readme_install and it will help you with the rest of the program.
How To Spot A Fake Id
1. Make sure the photo and description match the appearance of the customer.
2. Look at the ID under a bright light to detect printing flaws and alterations.
3. Question minors about their birth date, address and license number. Many have not memorized the correct information or forget when pressured by a clerk.
4. Check the lamination for peeling, scratches or bubbles.
5. Check the back of the ID. Many fake IDs are blank on the back.
6. Make sure that the state seal, logo or hologram have not been altered.
7. Write questionable ID numbers in a log to verify at a later date. This will also serve to dissuade minors from returning to your store.
8. Talk to your local police about what to do with a fake ID.
9. If you have any doubts, ask for a second ID. People with fake IDs rarely carry back-up identification.
